Best Nature, Alpine Peaks, Coastlines & Scenic Train Rides in France (프랑스)

Car-free rail and cable-car journeys to Mont Blanc, Lake Annecy, the Calanques of Marseille, and the Côte d'Azur.

You do not need a rental car to reach France's highest glaciers, turquoise alpine lakes, or Mediterranean limestone fjords. SNCF TER regional trains and municipal buses connect straight to trailheads and cableway base stations.

Along the Riviera, the coastal TER Zou! line hugs the cliffs between Cannes, Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Monaco, and Menton every 15 to 30 minutes, while the Mont-Blanc Express climbs narrow-gauge tracks through the Chamonix valley.

Riviera Coastal TER Line, Cap-Ferrat Trail & Train des Merveilles

Walk the pine-shaded Sentier du Littoral around Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, ride the coastal train to Èze and Menton, or climb inland from Nice-Ville aboard the scenic Train des Merveilles toward Tende.

Practical tips

  • From June 1 to September 30, check the official Mes Calanques app or departmental fire-risk map after 18:00 the evening before hiking in the Calanques National Park, and reserve free mandatory day permits for Sugiton.
  • For the Aiguille du Midi cable car in Chamonix, book the earliest morning cabin (07:30–08:30) before midday thermal clouds gather around the summit of Mont Blanc.
